welcome to our viewers on pbs in america and around the globe. leaders of more than 50 nations have promised full support for afghanistan as it prepares to take charge of its own security. nato leaders gathered in chicago and formally endorsed plans to pull out combat troops by the end of 2014. however, a deal between the u.s. and pakistan over nato supply routes crossing the country is perusing -- proving elusive. we have this report from chicago. >> 11 years of war, nearly 3000 allied troops have died, at least 12,000 afghan civilians have been killed. it cost more than three and 50 billion pounds. now the message is it is almost over. we are approaching another milestone along the long road home. >> we will set a goal for afghan forces to take the lead for combat operations across the country in 2013. next year. isaf can move to a supporting role. this will be another step toward afghans taking the lead for their security as agreed to by 2014 when a combat mission will end. >> the words cannot disguise the fact that the end will be difficult.
